Gay Weddings in Canada
On June 10, 2003, the Ontario Court of Appeal reached
a landmark decision. In Halpern et al. v. Attorney General of Canada et al., the
Court declared: the existing common law definition of marriage to be invalid to
the extent that it refers to "one man and one woman;" and reformulated the common
law definition of marriage as: "the voluntary union for life of two persons to
the exclusion of all others."
This decision sparked increased interest
in same sex unions in Canada and around the world.
Please note that the
law is changing in Canada. Marriage is a within provincial jurisdiction. Only
in British Columbia and Ontario can same-sex couples be sure to get their union
registered. In other provinces, same-sex couples may get married but may have
to wait until same-sex unions are enshrined in law to have their marriage registered.

in Canada.
